Where to stay near St Mark's Square at a glance

St Mark's Square lies in the sestiere of San Marco, the district with the Campanile, the Clock Tower, the Museo Correr, the basilica and the Doge's Palace. Castello, the largest sestiere, borders it along the Bacino San Marco. For a stay close to the square, these two are the districts to search first.

This page lists no hotels and no room prices. It helps you judge any listing yourself. For advice on all the districts of Venice, see where to stay in Venice.

San Marco as part of an address does not prove a view of the square or a certain walking time. Castello is large, so do not treat all of it as next to the square. Check western addresses one by one on a map, and look at the route from the property to the nearest stop as well as to the square. We do not rate one area as cheaper or quieter. Compare the specific listings instead.

What to check before you book

Five questions that matter more than the district name.

The real walking route

Measure the walk from the nearest water bus stop to the door, not from the square. Streets in Venice are narrow, and a few hundred metres can take longer than the map suggests.

Bridges and steps

Count the bridges on the way. Bridges often mean steps, which matters with a suitcase. Do not assume a step-free route. Ask the property for the exact way from the stop.

A lift in the building

Ask whether the building has its own lift and whether it serves your floor. A hotel name or a star rating does not say.

Luggage transfer

Ask whether the property helps with luggage from the stop or the station, and what it costs. Do not assume it is free or available.

Flood precautions

Ask what the property does when acqua alta is forecast. Nobody can promise a building is safe from high water. Read the page on acqua alta and bring waterproof shoes in the season.

Arriving with luggage

The last stretch is on foot or by water.

Line 1 runs along the Grand Canal to San Marco Vallaresso and on to the San Zaccaria stop. In the autumn 2026 timetable, one example journey from the station at 06:24 reached Vallaresso at 07:05 (41 minutes) and San Zaccaria at 07:10 (46 minutes). Those times exclude waiting and walking. A 75-minute ticket costs €9.50, and validate it when you board.

Giardinetti and San Zaccaria are different stops on different branches, so check which one is closer to your property. On foot, the walk from the station or Piazzale Roma to the square takes about 30 minutes without luggage or crowds, and the walk from Rialto 5 to 10 minutes. The full system is explained on the Venice getting around guide. Our page on getting to St Mark's Square has more.

If you come by car, the car terminal is Piazzale Roma. Tronchetto and Mestre or Marghera are alternatives with onward transport. One example at Piazzale Roma is the municipal garage, which costs €35 per indivisible 24 hours, has a height limit of 2.20 m and is open around the clock. Reservations close at 24:00 the day before. The last stretch to the square is on foot or by water.

Where to stay near St Mark's Square: frequently asked questions

Which district is closest to St Mark's Square?

The sestiere of San Marco holds the square and its main monuments. Western parts of Castello along the Bacino San Marco can also be close, but Castello is large, so check each address on a map.

Does a San Marco address mean a view of the square?

No. San Marco in an address does not prove a view of the square or a set walking time. Ask the property and check the map.

How far is the square from the train station?

About 30 minutes on foot from Santa Lucia station or Piazzale Roma, without luggage or crowds. Line 1 on the water bus took 46 minutes to San Zaccaria in one autumn 2026 timetable example, excluding waiting.

Is Castello cheaper or quieter than San Marco?

We make no claim either way. Compare the specific listings, their walking routes and their reviews.

Should I worry about acqua alta when I choose a hotel?

It is worth a question to the property. Nobody can promise a building stays dry in high water. Ask what the property does when a flood is forecast.
