St Mark's Square in a nutshell

Piazza San Marco lies in the Sestiere San Marco. The Campanile, the Clock Tower, the Museo Correr, the basilica and the Doge's Palace all stand around it or on the Piazzetta that runs down to the water. The square itself is public and free to enter. Tickets are for the buildings, not for the paving. Events, building works or high water can close parts of the square for a while.

To get there from Santa Lucia station, take vaporetto line 1 to San Marco Vallaresso or San Zaccaria. In the autumn 2026 timetable, one sample run took 41 minutes to Vallaresso and 46 minutes to San Zaccaria. On foot, the Soprintendenza gives about 30 minutes from the station or Piazzale Roma. This is an independent guide. It is not run by the City of Venice, the basilica, a museum or a tour company. Prices are in euros, as published for 2026, and they change.
